For 53 years, Siemens has been active in Morocco, where it holds leading positions in its Industry, Energy and Healthcare Sectors. For example, Siemens is involved in building cement factories and power plants. It is also playing a major part in the electrification and automation of several industrial establishments. In fiscal 2009 (October 1, 2008 – September 30, 2009), sales to customers in Morocco amounted to almost EUR 86.2 million. New orders totaled nearly EUR 64 million. Siemens currently has more than 300 employees in Morocco.
In fiscal 2009, Siemens in Morocco scored major successes in the following Sectors:
Industry Sector
In Morocco, the Office National des Chemins de Fer (ONCF) awarded Siemens its rail transportation project. The scope of the project includes engineering, supplying, parameter settings, installation works, testing and setting up a system of board equipment speed control.Siemens also won several sugar and cement industry contracts as well as contracts for infrastructure projects that include complex buildings, airports and urban area electrification.
We also successfully met our deadline and delivered the Mazagan tourist project, which included an entire electrical installation (low and medium voltage networks and complete information & IT systems networks). This project is the first of its kind to be undertaken in Morocco within the framework of the Azur Plan and – as viewed by Morocco’s neighbors - it serves as a significant testament as to what we can accomplish.
The Industry Solutions Division set up a major part of the electrical equipment solution (low voltage network, erection) for the new cement factory of the ITALCEMENTI Group, Aît-Baha – one of the world’s most important producers of cement.
Our technical expertise, our flexibility when it comes to customizing solutions, and the speed of our deliveries were all in great demand by sugar and other industrial manufacturers.
Energy Sector
In the second quarter of 2009, Véolia Group, the main power network operator in the North of Morocco, placed new orders with the Energy Sector. The Power Transmission and Power Distribution Divisions have the mandate to modernize a control center for Rabat city and to deliver two new control centers for the cities of Tangier and Tetouan. The order also includes comprehensive training for the network operator’s technical personnel. These projects were awarded in spite of strong competition because we were able to offer: the best technical solution; the greatest experience with similar, previously installed solutions; and the impressive skills of our local engineering staff.
Siemens was also awarded a turnkey project for the Maghreb-Steel 245 kV substation. The scope of supply for the project includes electrical engineering, civil engineering and erection.
In addition, the company provided energy solutions for two power-industrial plants that are owned by the Office Chérifien des Phosphates (OCP) Group – Pakistan Phosphore and Bungi Maroc Phosphore. Siemens was also awarded an order to supply two industrial turbines (16 MW each) for the OCP-Safi chemical plant.
In the field of renewable energy, Siemens was awarded a contract to supply the electrical infrastructure (medium voltage, high-voltage, control and command system) for the 60 MW-Essaouira wind farm. The project was awarded on the heels of Siemens success in supplying the electrical installations. Those included the extension of the high- voltage substation with switchbays for two 225 kV power transformers as well as 33 kV medium-voltage switchgear for the 140 MW Tangier wind farm.
Healthcare Sector
Siemens Healthcare continues to deliver quality products and innovative solutions to Moroccan customers in both the public and private sectors. We also continue to build up a strong partnership with the Military Hospital Mohamed V and the new University Hospital in Fez. We were awarded a significant public-private partnership project that requires us to supply a new IT management network. The network will facilitate the workflow and optimize the communication, costs and performance of the two hospitals. As part of the two-hospital project, Siemens will also be installing multi-modality equipment such as the fluoroscopy and surgery systems.
Siemens is also focusing on offering equipment and solutions to private practices in Morocco, providing solutions that are adapted to the specific needs of the customers. In addition, the Healthcare Sector launched the ultrasound modality in the Moroccan market in order to enhance business in both the served and un-served markets.
Founded in 1956 under the name Siemens Maroc SARL, the company renamed itself Société Electrotechnique et de Télécommunications S.A. (SETEL) in 1973. After a change in the ownership structure that increased Siemens AG’s stake, the Moroccan company’s name was changed again to Siemens S.A. on October 1, 2000, and has since been included in the Siemens consolidated financial statements. Today, a well-rounded team of more than 250 engineers, technicians and administrative experts allow Siemens Morocco to offer complex solutions that are precisely tailored to meet a customer’s needs. For this purpose, the company maintains product management teams, project offices, workshops, laboratories and warehouses.
